This course will introduce students to legal theory. The class will examine theoretical perspectives and look at the law as a tool for social control. Why do societies have laws? Do people need laws to maintain order? These questions and many more will be raised during class discussions. Legal systems are constantly evolving. While there is no widely accepted theory of law and society, there is general agreement on a number of theoretical perspectives. There are many theories when it comes to the study of law and society and by the end of this course, students will be able discuss these theories and their complex relationship.
