Structure of American Law Courses

In this course, students will learn about the structure of law and its basis in the U.S. Constitution. The class will also discuss the structure and powers of the courts and the legislative process by which laws are created.

Constitutional law is one of the major substantive areas of the law because the U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land. Upholding the Constitution was the most important thing when the country first became an organized and unified country.

Students now have an understanding of what the law is as well as its structure, how it is controlled and its origin and function in society. There are three main branches of government, the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches and these branches, at both the federal and state levels, are joined by administrative agencies and the body of administrative law controlling these agencies. Students understand laws are only enforced and enacted through the branches of government and the system of checks and balances. The separation of powers is a key concept in the American legal system. It is also important to realize the relationship between these three powers.
