This course focuses primarily on the U.S. Constitution -- the central document of authority in this country. Students will learn how the Constitution was created to establish an ordered society and how it distributes power among the three branches of government.
This course will introduce students to tort law including its history, the civil litigation process and intentional torts.
American tort law is based on the common law of England. A lot has changed over time and now there are several specific tort causes of action including international torts, negligence and strict liability torts.
The course will also take students through the steps of filing a civil suit, from filing a complaint and summons to the trial process.
Intentional torts are designed with the intent to harm another person or their property. The intent can be shown in two ways: intent that exists where a person desires the result to occur and intent where the individual did something with the belief that the result was substantially certain to occur. This course will cover everything from assault and battery to false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress; trespass to land and to chattel, as well as conversion. Intentional tort defenses include mistake, consent, self-defense and defense of property.
