Civil litigation is a complex subject. It is important for paralegals and those who want to understand their rights to understand the civil law process, especially when they are filing a lawsuit.

This course will introduce the topics of jurisdiction, the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, informal discovery, parties to a civil suit, the Federal Rules of Evidence and legal documents including the letter of complaint and demand.

Course Outcomes

• By the end of this course, students will be able to describe the role of the paralegal in the litigation process and apply ethical guidelines to the civil litigation process.
• Participants will investigate civil disputes, apply concepts of jurisdiction as used in the federal and state courts and construct logical arguments in support of specific positions taken in a lawsuit.
• Students will also prepare for witness interviews in the trial preparation process and draft legal correspondence in civil lawsuits as well as initial pleadings and accompanying court documents.
