A broad education in media, communications, and the humanities may be a great way to gain a well-rounded education relevant to a variety of professional fields. An interdisciplinary studies or communication bachelor’s degree may provide students with the foundations to succeed in many media-related industries.
Students may choose to take concentrations in media and government, international media, history of media, or traditional media, though the availability will depend upon the exact program. Media courses also vary by program, but students often learn about journalism, ethics in media, aspects of mass communication, effective writing, persuasive ability, visual competencies, and public relations techniques. Since more and more publishing is done online, students will learn about publishing in the digital world using digital tools.
Graduates of the degree may have gained many abilities that are applicable to professions that deal primarily with communicating to others. A career in public relations is such a profession and may require a great understanding of media and media influence in addition to effective communication skills.
Careers in marketing may also deal with communication and require devising strategies based on various forms of media to promote the particular business, organization, or idea. Advertising requires similar skill sets, but also makes great use of visual understanding and persuasive competencies, making careers within the industry potentially great choices for those with the degree.
