Most professions involve dealing with employees, either coworkers or those under management. When dealing with or advocating for employees and coworkers, it may be essential to have a good understanding of workplace leadership, conflict resolution, and negotiation. A bachelor’s degree in labor relations may teach students those techniques and more.
Students may also learn complex aspects such as compensation management, the role of government in business, collective bargaining, organizational psychology, sociology, labor laws, and employment ethics. Understanding how to bargain and negotiate may be useful both as a manager and as an employee. A background in sociological elements, history, and communication will also help inform students as to the contexts important in the field of study.
Graduates of a labor relations degree or with a concentration in labor relations may be suited for many careers. Human resources departments are often in need of those that understand the delicate balance of factors at work in environments that deal with employees.
Graduates may also work hands on in training and development, ensuring that new and old employees alike are kept up to date on company policy and procedure. As recruitment officers, graduates may have a chance to find talent and bring them on board the organization. Graduates may additionally consider a career advocating directly for labor by working in union management.
