UMUC's Graduate Bioinformatics Certificate is intended to provide students with a core set of knowledge and skills in this rapidly growing area in the biotechnology industry. Bioinformatics specialists are in ever-increasing demand and job opportunities are appearing at the interface of molecular biology and information technology.
Bioinformatics is the application of computer technology to the management of biological information. Computers are used to gather, store, analyze and integrate biological and genetic information which can then be applied to gene-based drug discovery and development. The need for Bioinformatics capabilities has been precipitated by the explosion of publicly available genomic information resulting from the Human Genome Project.
Core coursework includes: Introduction and Advanced Bioinformatics, Statistical Processes for Biotechnology, Relational Database Systems, and Data Structures and Algorithms. This certificate requires 15 semester hours to complete.
