Bachelor of Science in Gerontology

The Bachelor of Science in Gerontology offered by UMUC will prepare students to apply interdisciplinary gerontological knowledge to work with older adults in one's chosen area of practice as well as describe and analyze the biological and psychosocial processes of aging. As our population ages and people are living longer, opportunities abound for well-paying positions in an array of fields including policy analysis, senior housing management, and many more. Students will analyze the impact of race, ethnicity, gender, and social class on the aging process and identify and apply cross-cultural and international perspectives on aging. This degree requires the successful completion of 120 credits of coursework. ObjectivesThe student who graduates with a major in gerontology will be able to:

  • Describe and analyze the biological and psychosocial processes of aging.
  • Analyze the impact of race, ethnicity, gender, and social class on the aging process.
  • Identify and apply cross-cultural and international perspectives on aging.
  • Identify services and programs available to older adults locally and nationally.
  • Articulate and analyze the development of policies related to aging.
  • Demonstrate the ability to access, interpret, and apply gerontological research findings.
  • Apply interdisciplinary gerontological knowledge to work with older adults in one's chosen area of practice.
