Bachelor of General Studies

Many students find that their college studies have been interrupted by day-to-day life, including families, work, and other obligations. While they may have a desire to complete their bachelor’s degree, they may already be on a career path that doesn’t need educational requirements. Additionally, some students may have the desire to complete a bachelor’s degree in a wider range of studies, without being tied down to one narrow focus of scholastic work. Students like these may want to consider seeking a Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies. A bachelor’s in general studies is often termed as an interdisciplinary degree because students have a great deal of flexibility in the courses they take once they have met their school’s general education requirements. In fact, once basic requirements are met, students can generally pick and choose from a number of academic disciplines without necessarily focusing on one. However, some schools also offer a Bachelor of General Studies that focus on a specific concentration within an industry such as management and technology. In this instance, students can choose from classes within those two tracks, combining classes to suit their educational desires and needs. BGS programs have become increasingly popular for so-called non-traditional students, with many community colleges and adult education programs creating programs designed to meet the specific educational needs for industries in their regional area.
