Studying history allows one to delve into the past to discover its content, influence, and meaning. Understanding the world around us requires historical context, and a degree in history will prepare students for just that kind of understanding. Reading, research, and analysis are vital skills to any student hoping to successfully complete the program. Students will also receive instruction in historiography, which are the various methodologies used by historians to study the past, as well as many of the philosophical debates concerning differing historiography approaches. It is also imperative for history students to learn to write well, as history often requires keeping records, taking positions, defending arguments, and writing research papers. Successful history students will also gain knowledge of various epochs of humanity, cultural differences throughout time, religion, and the roots of many modern day traditions.
With further education in a specific subject, graduates of history can look forward to writing and researching careers, as well as positions of professorship at many universities. With a bachelor of arts in history, graduates can teach secondary education or pursue jobs as a journalist or archivist, where the research and writing skills gained throughout the degree will prove useful. A degree in history implies a full liberal arts education which is suited to work in many professions and types of jobs.
