Accounting is the math behind businesses and government budgets. Earning a degree in accounting will prepare students to understand all the financial complexities necessary to function in either the business world or the public sector. Matters such as expense reports, cash flow statements, and balance sheets will be taught to students so as to prepare them for the world of accounting in business. The various advantages, disadvantages, legal issues, and taxation issues involved in different types of business entities such as corporations, limited liability companies, and partnerships will also be taught. A firm understanding of the mathematics required for proper financial accounting as well as detailed knowledge of tax codes and procedures will be an asset to a student of accounting regardless of the chosen career.
Careers in accounting are many and include areas in management, auditing, or in treasuries within for-profit or non-profit companies and government institutions. Accountants will be required to obtain proper licensure to work lawfully within their respective jurisdictions, which usually includes the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification. A CPA will find opportunities anywhere that finance is of concern, and may also find success working as an independent business person offering tax preparation services or financial management to those in need of expert advice.
