History has long been a subject that sits at the crossroads between the differing disciplines of the natural sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences. Although history is broadly the study of the past, a degree in history from a social science perspective can be expected to concentrate on history mostly as it pertains to people and culture. Students of the degree will learn to understand themselves and their world as a part of the larger tapestry of time, tradition, and change. Writing and research are important in the degree as historians are expected to both be able to relate previous events as well as take positions on their impact.
Those with degrees in history will be able to take part in the strong tradition of teaching history or in researching and analyzing history. The degree will impart many important aspects of a liberal arts education and will therefore qualify the degree holder for many of the same pursuits. However, with a historical background, writing and journalism become strong possibilities as the study of historical contexts can greatly aid the writer’s ability to draw on knowledge of the past in order to project the future. Pursuing higher education in the field of history can lead to positions in universities as a professor of history prepared to extend the knowledge of the past to future students.
