Where humanities and entertainment meet is the discipline of media studies. A bachelor of art in film and media studies may prepare students with a solid liberal arts education by teaching critical thinking techniques, analytical thought, reading comprehension, and effective communication through words, visuals, and speech. The film and media studies aspect can provide a solid foundation in film history and the role it has played in shaping our culture and our lives. With the contextual understandings of history, politics, culture, religion, and other factors, students could learn to analyze work in the media industry for both substance and style. Mediums like television have shaped how people perceive events in the past, and they continue to do so today. There are also ethical ramifications to television, film, and other entertainment media that may be analyzed and explored.
Given the robust background in writing, communication, and historical contexts and issues surrounding media, graduates of the program could do well as journalists, perhaps specializing in matters of media or as photojournalists recording events visually. Careers working in the production of film, television, or another medium could also be good choices for graduates of the degree. The writing and contextual background granted by the program may serve graduates well as critics, where they will offer formal opinions and critical analysis on the latest media entertainment offerings.
