Associate of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies

Many corporations and businesses recognize that having employees who are trained or educated in more than one field of study can be very valuable. Today, students who want to receive their associate’s degree across a range of disciplines may want to seek an Associate of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. Interdisciplinary studies is different than other degree programs because it incorporates knowledge from numerous academic areas to create a degree that uses various ways of looking at one subject. While some colleges have programs that are fixed, other programs are more fluid, allowing students to mix and match courses. In a fixed, or structured program, the school will have a set series of coursework to accomplish. As an example, a person who is interested in social work may take classes in criminal justice and child psychology, and government organization. This allows students to have a very broad base from which to approach a given subject. Of course, students will also have to fulfill all of the required general education classes, in addition to the coursework for their chosen major. Choosing an interdisciplinary degree program allows students to experience a much wider core of knowledge from various fields, yet still related to the main focus of study.
