An associate of arts degree in illustration is a stand-alone degree that provides core college coursework alongside the artistic concentration of illustration. Other associate’s degrees those interested in illustration may want to pursue include an associate of fine arts and the associate of applied science, which are slightly different from the associate of arts. AAS and AFA degrees open more concentration options for a field like illustration, while the AA combines the concentration with traditional core subject work. Like most art-concentrated fields, this degree can require a prerequisite portfolio or skill exam prior to program acceptance, as the student may need to have some form of inherent illustrative skill in order to keep up in the classroom, and keep ahead in their career. Through the course of study, students are taught studio practices, color theories, and basic production principles. These principles are traditionally applied to careers where graduates can go on to become artists, producing drawings for a number of different specialties. One option might be within marketing and advertising departments, an option that could provide the widest range of entry-level positions after graduation. Another option, though much more specified than the previous, would be to work as an illustrator for publishers and designers within exciting industries like comic book publishing and fashion.
