Communications is a very versatile major. Those with communications degrees go into varied career fields such as journalism and marketing. The one thing that these careers have in common is that they are all related to communicating with people. An Associate of Arts in Communication may prepare you to enter a number of professions that require someone with strong communication skills, either oral or written. Fields like journalism and public relations, which involve announcing events to the masses, or marketing and advertising, which involve communicating with the public to sell a product or service, are all related to communication. In today’s world much of our communication is done on the internet, so this is opening up a whole new industry to people with communication degrees.

Most Associate of Arts in Communication degrees will delve into the social sciences as a foundation for learning the science of communication. Psychology courses might discuss how different communication techniques might affect the human mind. Sociology courses might discuss how humans communicate with each other in societies. The different forms of communication – visual, oral, written - will likely also be discussed. Many communication degrees now include courses specific to the internet that discuss social media, websites, and blogs.
