Wireless Technology Courses

This course provides students with a broad overview of wireless communications including in-depth coverage of protocols, transmission methods and IEEE standards. It will cover the new developments in wireless devices and the many real-world business applications available. During this course, students learn wireless terminology, basic radio wave foundations and the way to choose a workable wireless solution.

The range of services available to consumers using wireless technology is expanding everyday, which means the job market is growing and expanding as well. It is important for those interested in entering this field to have an understanding of the systems used all over the world that makes wireless communication possible.

In this course, students will review the growth of the Internet and the role of one of these standards organizations, such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which created the Open System Interconnection (OSI) Model. Students will look at the different types of networks -- such as LANs and WANs, network media and network topologies -- and describe how these technologies influence wireless communications. The variety of wireless products and services has expanded -- approximately 40 percent of business-to-consumer e-commerce transactions outside North America are initiated from a wireless device.

Course Objectives

  • By the end of this course, students will be able to outline the history and evolution of wireless communications, describe different wireless technologies and discuss the science of radio waves.
  • They will also be able to explain the rationale of choosing a wireless network, describe the development and adoption of wireless protocol standards, compare public wireless system applications to those in the private sector and discuss emerging wireless technology trend.
