Routers and Switches Courses

This course prepares students interested in learning how to design, configure and maintain network routing and switching. Students learn the basic concepts, protocols and functions of network routers and switches. The course emphasizes on hands-on practice of configuration and troubleshooting using live and simulated labs.

Students focus their attention on IP addressing and creating sub networks based on different requirements. Sub-netting is the process of dividing a large network into multiple smaller sub networks based on the number of networks or hosts required. They are also referred to as broadcast domains. Advantages of sub-netting include manageability, improving troubleshooting, performance and added security on a network.

TCP/IP uses a logical addressing scheme. By using the three major IP address classes, an individual can create different size networks. Creating a custom subnet mask allows the administrator to divide the network into the exact size they need.

In this course, students will identify the three IP address classes and the default subnet mask -- helping to determine how many hosts are on a network and calculate the network address. Students will then see how manipulating the subnet mask will change the number of sub networks and hosts per subnet.

A LAN connects computers and other devices in a single geographic location by using different hubs and switches. A network that connects several LANs is called a WAN -- WANs use routers to connect all of the LANs.

Routers support many interfaces to connect to various LAN protocols. A special interface called a serial interface allows routers to connect to a communications carrier and send information between locations.

Course Objectives

  • By the end of this course, students will be able to explain network routing and switching concepts and evaluate devices, protocols and network traffic. They will be able to plan routing and switching configurations and design VLANs based on specific situations. Participants will propose an IP addressing scheme based on business needs and configure routers and switches utilizing lab simulation software.
