Database Design Courses

This course covers the advanced concepts of the use of reporting tools and database query design. Students can expect to expand their current database skills, as they design and create queries using SQL. Special emphasis is on the skills needed to develop queries and reports for business.

While a basic understanding of SQL is assumed, much of the material will go over reviewing basic SQL commands and syntax. Students will then be asked to download a robust SQL engine, which will be used throughout this course.

In general, the SQL language is divided into three major groups: DML (Data Manipulation Language), DDL (Data Definition Language) and DCL (Data Control Language). This course will examine, in greater detail, the capabilities of this SQL variant and use it to develop applications using the Microsoft SQL Server 2000. A brief history of the development of modern relational databases will also be discussed in class.

Course Objectives

  • By the end of this course, students will be able to describe and use SQL and be able to apply skills to other query languages, explain the different mathematical foundations for query languages and write SELECT queries to retrieve and manage data. They will also use third party reporting tools to select and retrieve data from the database and exchange information between and among databases.
