This advanced Linux course allows students to configure a Linux production system for authentication, network services, security, backup and recovery. Students learn to monitor performance and set up SAMBA and Apache and will discuss the use of GUI and command-line tools to troubleshoot client and server connectivity throughout the program.
During this course, students will explore how the Linux operating system is installed. The full set of installation configuration options are explored, from the system language to disk partitioning to which software packages to install. System configuration continues with the security step of setting the root password, configuring network connections and getting the latest packages through an online update.
The class will also cover system initialization. Topics covered include shutting down and restarting a Linux system and the GRUB boot loader, which is configured and controlled with YaST and from the command line. System settings are retrieved and modified dynamically while the system is running, and are statically set by changing system configuration files.
Students will learn the management of processes and services that run under Linux. The differences between jobs, processes, daemons and services will also be examined. Process priorities and run state are retrieved and modified, configuration changes to running processes are made and system-level startup and shutdown scripts are located and controlled. This course will also introduce the security involved in protecting a Linux server from unauthorized access.
