This course provides students with the skills and information needed to design local area networks. The course features an emphasis on analysis and planning skills. Based on business needs, the network solutions that students learn to design will ultimately support network applications.Students will examine the network design process from basic definitions, to network services, to post-implementation. Networks are not independent structures, but complex systems that function properly only if the design incorporates proven design principles. Using a systems approach, students study what network services deliver and what makes up service characteristics as well as the methods of sustaining network performance. Individuals will then be asked to create their first network model using OPNET IT Guru Academic Edition. This course also teaches students how to gather network requirements including user, application, device and network components. Students will learn how to develop performance requirements for capacity, delay and RMA. Participants will also learn how to identify and characterize network traffic flow, including data sources and sinks and flow models. Topics covered include addressing, routing, network management, performance and security.
