The goal of this program is to prepare students for an entry-level medical assistant positions. The program focuses primarily on helping students develop their skills in performing clinical, laboratory and medical office procedures. Students must complete a 240-hour unpaid, supervised internship in a physician’s officer or clinic in order to qualify for graduation. Upon graduation, medical assistant students might be asked to perform duties such as routine laboratory tests which include blood work, urinalysis and venipuncture. Students will also study electrocardiograms. They will also assist the doctor in patient preparation and examination while maintaining a professional attitude and demeanor. By the end of this program, students will be able to communicate effectively in a diverse society using visual and written methods as well as utilize quantitative information and scientific principles to arrive at reasoned decisions in solving everyday problems. Graduates will have the ability to problem solve logically and ethically within the discipline and make ethical decisions based on an understanding of the impact of historical, political, social and economic events and factors. Graduates will also be able to apply their program-specific competencies in entry-level medical office support activities.
