The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree is a graduate school program designed to prepare students to become primary and secondary school teachers. MAT students will be exposed to leading education philosophies and learn to effectively promote student development and achievement in classroom environments.
MAT programs are generally structured to include one to two years of graduate-level classes and a variety of elective classes. Students may add a specialization to their degree plan which may increase their post-graduate marketability. Specialties in Master of Arts in Teaching programs provide additional in-depth focus on certain subjects and teaching methods. Possible MAT specializations include teaching literacy and language, teaching science, teaching mathematics, teaching with technology and teaching students with special needs. While enrolled in a Master of Arts in Teaching program, students will take courses covering topics such as academic content and instruction, diverse learners, assessment of skills and professional responsibilities and relationships. Many schools include courses requiring classroom assignments and therefore demand candidates with a current teaching position or the ability to interact with a consistent group of learners.
This degree covers the standard competencies across most teaching roles needed to excel in diverse classroom settings. Equipped with an understanding of the theories and practices used by practicing teachers, MAT students will be prepared for success in careers as teachers in many disciplines. Many Masters of Arts in Teaching programs provide certifications that are recognized by multiple states. Whether students are interested in primary or secondary schools, a Master of Arts in Teaching will enable them to excel in their position. Candidates who successfully complete the program will be awarded a Master of Arts in Teaching degree.
